Chapter 15

Alice stroked her fingers through Sam’s glossy hair, the smooth movements comforting as he stretched across her lap in a distinctively feline way.

He chuckled at the movie they were watching, his hand reaching out to grab the popcorn in the bowl by the floor. Alice darted her eyes up to the screen, watching the clearly fake vampire bite into his busty victim’s neck. She couldn’t see clearly, the mid-day sun streaming through the gaps in the curtain, so she went back to stroking Sam’s hair, enjoying the heavy silk through her fingers.

“Watch this bit,” Sam laughed. “You can clearly see how fake the blood is.”

They both had the majority of the day off, and had decided to catch up with their weekly movie. It was Sam’s choice, which was why they were watching a poorly rated B-movie with the worst acting she had ever seen. She loved him, but he truly had the worst taste in movies.

“Hey, did you see it?” Sam moved onto his elbow, his hair pulling from her hands as he turned to check. “Are you even watching?” His eyebrows came down in concern.

“How can I not watch the man with those abs?” she smirked, knowing it would get a reaction. “Remind me again why you chose this specific film?”

He grinned, the leopard showing unrepentant mischief in his eyes.

“You can’t say I don’t treat ya.” He popped another popcorn into his mouth before relaxing back onto her lap, his head resting on her thigh.

As soon as he started to laugh at the film once more she allowed her smile to drop, her hands busying themselves in his hair once more.

She couldn’t concentrate on the screen, her brain overthinking every little detail of the past few days. It was actually comforting to sit with Sam, to hear his untainted joy at such a simple thing. He was her rock, kept her down to earth. He knew all her secrets, her nightmares, her worries. And he loved her anyway, flaws and all.

“That was one of the worst films you have ever made me watch,” Alice said an hour later. “Not even the abs could make up for it.”

“Nah, it wasn’t that bad.” Sam stretched his arms above his head, turning to look at her. “Your choice next week, you can torture me with one of those sci-fi’s,” he groaned, pouting.

“I’ve decided on a superhero one, actually,” she grinned, knowing he secretly loved all things fantasy and sci-fi just as much as she did. Last year she had gotten him to dress up as a green monster for a convention, he groaned the whole day but she knew he loved the attention. It wasn’t like she wasn’t dressed up too, in the matching monster outfit.

“So you’ve been quiet,” Sam commented as he sat up.

“Did you want me to talk through the whole film?”

He poked her nose. “You know what I mean,” he smirked. “How was training?”

Alice looked away, not sure what to say. “It was okay.”

“You’re not telling me something.
